Giving Back with Sydney based Non-For-Profit, Newstep
This January, we are running a Giving Back initiative in partnership with a small but hugely impactful organisation called Newstep. Newstep is a Sydney based non-for-profit who stand with underprivileged young adults, those experiencing homelessness, and anyone else in need, with the goal to supply good quality footwear donated BY the community TO the community.
We want to have a big impact, and to make that possible we are going to need your help!
Who are Newstep?
Newstep was formed by three Sydney locals, Ross, Joe & Kali, due to a desire to give back to the community by providing good quality shoes to those who need them. Ross, a self-confessed sneaker-head, often has sports shoes which he no longer wears but are in great condition. Rather than sending these to landfill, or placing them in a donation bin for a charity/thrift shop, he attempted to seek out an organisation which could guarantee the pre-loved pairs of Nikes, Adidas’ & Jordans were placed directly in the hands of those who truly needed them. The search was unsuccessful, hence, Newstep was born.
“It’s been amazing how our community has come together to give back to society. We had a vision to make a difference in people’s lives and I feel we are on the right path after donating over 200 sneakers to those in need in such a short space of time,” Ross states.
What sets Newstep apart is that all footwear donations they receive go directly to those who need them.
Newsteps most recent collection was able to help communities who were affected by the catastrophic bushfires this time last year. These donations have enabled young adults to start or continue in a much loved sport and chase their dreams.
Newstep and sustainability
It’s estimated that 20 billion pairs of shoes are produced annually, with roughly 300 million pairs ending up in landfills after they have been worn. To add to this, the shock absorbing midsole that is often found in trainers, ethylene vinyl acetate, can remain in landfill for up to 1,000 years. By donating your once loved but no longer needed trainers, you are helping to release the environmental burden associated with fashion/footwear production.
When you donate a pair of shoes it’s more than just cleaning out your closet – you’re helping the planet AND changing someone’s life.
How can you help?
Did you receive some new trainers as a Christmas gift meaning you no longer wear your previous pair? Do you have heaps of trainers but only wear a small selection of your favourite ones? Do you have an old pair in the back of your wardrobe that you’re keeping thinking some day you might wear them again?
If you have a pair, maybe two pairs, maybe even three, of good quality sport shoes that are in great condition that you’re willing to donate please either:
- Drop in the donation box at 74 Hewlett Street, Bronte, NSW, 2024
- Email firstname.lastname@example.org or direct message @plantandprosperco with your location and we will organise a day to collect if appropriate.
We are also seeking help from the community for different areas within Sydney. If you think you may be able to help we would very much like to hear from you!
Ways you can help for your area:
- Organise a drop off point that is more convenient for those who are not located near Bronte for the current drop off point. We will then collect from you.
- Do a drive around your area to collect the donations and have these ready to collect by the Plant & Prosper team on an agreed date
Please note, this shoe drive is for the Sydney Metropolitan area only. Whilst we will do our best to collect all donations within this area, this is largely dependent on the location of pick up and in some instances this may not be possible.
What kind of shoes can I donate?
The main focus of donation is good quality, clean pairs of sports shoes. Shoes outside of the sportswear range may be accepted, but please keep in mind this initiative is focused on sportswear. The Plant & Prosper and Newstep team will clean any shoes that need it, but please use your own judgement as to whether the shoes are suitable for donations. Think, would you be happy receiving the shoes in the condition they are in?
We will be shipping all donated shoes to Newstep for distribution on Wednesday 10th February.
Thank you for your support with this - one pair of shoes really could change the life of someone. Please drop us a message if you have any questions or can help out in any way!
